Compassion Is a Practice: Showing Up with Care at Work and in Life

Compassion is more than just kindness. But what does it really mean? And how can we be more compassionate in the ways we show up in the world?

I used to think that compassion was simply about being kind enough to avoid challenges or misunderstandings. I’ve come to realize that compassion doesn’t eliminate difficulties – it embraces them as a natural part of the human experience. We’re all doing our best to meet our own needs. Compassionate practices don’t prevent conflict; they give us practical tools to handle it with more ease, connection, and clarity.

That’s exactly what we explore in the Compassion@Work series – practicing compassion as an ongoing way of showing up for ourselves and others, even when things get hard.

Compassion is an active practice: staying curious about others, understanding our own feelings and needs, and engaging with care. In both professional and personal settings, compassion helps us navigate difficult conversations and situations. Compassionate communication, in particular, helps us move beyond judgment, express our needs clearly, and stay open to the needs of others.

Throughout our Compassion@Work series, participants often share how these practices have been transformative not just at work, but in their personal lives too. One participant said the training helped her handle challenges with more understanding and less reactivity. She said it gave her new ways to look at her own needs and the needs of others, helping her feel closer to people and bringing more calm and purpose to her life. As she put it:
“Compassion@Work allowed me to grow closer to my colleagues, practice compassionate exercises at work and in my personal life and develop more compassion for myself.”

Several participants have also shared that they’ve introduced the resources we explored together to their children and family members. They’re excited about the positive impact of modeling and celebrating compassionate practices at home, while supporting their loved ones to advocate for themselves in clear and empathetic ways. This is how meaningful, lasting change happens!

We’re excited to keep exploring these practices together and discovering how compassion can enrich all parts of our lives.
