Building Authentic Connections that Matter

Community Connecting in Action.

What does authentic connection really look like? How do we help people create lives filled with belonging, purpose, and meaningful contribution—guided by their own values and desires?

These questions drive everything we do in Community Connecting training. Through this series, we explore practical tools that help people become valued, included members of their communities while directly supporting HCBS Requirement #1: Access to Community. Our approach centers on working alongside people to discover what matters most to them, identify meaningful places to connect, build supportive relationships, and understand what truly effective support looks like.

Real Impact in Action

The power of this approach becomes clear when we hear from participants themselves. Recently, one Community Connector shared how the series transformed both her professional practice and personal perspective:

“I appreciate the tools that I’ve gotten through this training and being able to develop my skills as a life-long learner… And hearing the other participants, and what they’re doing, how they are doing it, how devoted they are, wow, it is so inspirational. I’ve learned so much.”

But the learning didn’t stop there. She immediately began applying these tools with the people she supports, her coworkers, and community members. After completing the series, she and another participant created a presentation showcasing Community Connecting skills and shared it at their staff meeting. The response was so positive that they’re now implementing these practices organization-wide and planning to introduce additional strategies in future meetings.

This is the ripple effect we love to see—Community Connectors initiating meaningful change and truly supporting people in living life on their own terms.

Partnership, Not Placement

Community Connecting is built on intentional learning, deep listening, and genuine partnership. This partnership creates an active, ongoing process of discovery, reflection, and shared action. When we approach community access this way, people aren’t simply being “placed” somewhere—they’re taking the lead, shaping their own lives, and becoming known and valued for who they truly are.

When people with disabilities receive support to build relationships in the places and with the people that matter to them, everyone benefits. With thoughtful Community Connectors providing support, these connections flourish and entire communities grow stronger together.
