Supporting the Right to Choose

Everyone deserves the right to make choices about their own life. It’s a simple idea, but one that can be overlooked in systems built around doing for instead of with people. That’s why we created the Supported Decision-Making (SDM) Series – a space to learn, reflect, and grow in how we support people to make decisions that truly matter to them.

At its core, this training is about honoring autonomy and amplifying voice. Choice and decision-making are foundational principles of the HCBS Final Rule. With the recent Conservatorship Reform and California’s new Supported Decision-Making law, there’s never been a more important time to understand what SDM can really look like in practice.

In the series, we explore a variety of tools, real-life scenarios, and meaningful ways to support decision-making, big and small. We talk about how to move from assumptions to conversations and staying curious, from decisions made about someone to decisions made with someone.

One participant recently shared how this learning came to life for him. After diving into a resource we shared during the session, he used it right away in a meeting with someone and their circle of support. The resource helped everyone focus on the person’s strengths and decision-making skills, rather than defaulting to making decisions for them. He was so inspired that he printed out copies of the resources for others in his organization.

He described the training as full of practical tools to
“advocate for a person’s right to decide for themselves and focus on capacity.”

It was powerful to witness how learning turned into action, and how one small shift can ripple outward and empower others to do the same.

Because Supported Decision-Making is still new in California, this kind of awareness-building matters. The law is important, but even more important is how we bring it to life: through education, conversation, and connection.

As one participant put it:

“It was not only a presentation to learn more about Supported Decision-Making, but also an opportunity to discuss with others in this field who are just as eager to learn how to better support the people we serve. I had great conversations with people in a variety of roles, and it was amazing to hear their different perspectives and approaches.”

We love hearing stories like these because they remind us that when we come together to learn, we’re also shaping a more inclusive and person-centered future.
