Planning for action

Now take a look at Joseph’s good days and bad days. Based on what you read, think about what it would take for Joseph to have more good days and less bad days.

Here are some of our suggestions for actions that will support Joseph to have more good days and less bad days. How do they compare to your ideas?

  • Support Joseph to get up at 6:30 each day.
  • Support Joseph to cook his own food as much as possible, or at least follow his instructions on how he likes things done.
  • Make a list of Joseph’s favorite meals and – importantly – how he likes them cooked.
  • Make sure there is opportunity to go out each day, making sure Joseph gets chance to walk along the canal.
  • Help keep visits to the morning and keep them to a minimum in the afternoon.
  • Where safe, Joseph always has time on his own in the bath.
  • Ask if Joseph wants the TV or radio on. Remind him if there is a ball game on.
  • Make sure Joseph gets to listen to Nina Simone each day. If he has forgotten, just ask if he wants to listen to her.
  • Make time to talk to Joseph about his life being a husband and ball player, his love of music and family.
  • Make time to laugh, have fun, particularly before he goes to bed.
